Evolocity is the Electric Vehicle Engineering and Electronics competition.

Burnside High School has been a successful participant and 2023 has been no exception!

We entered our youngest team ever (Year 8 - Year 10) into one of the largest fields we have competed against. 10 High Schools and 34 different vehicles.

Race day was Saturday 21 October. We managed to register 8 vehicles that were safe to get over the starting line.

Burnside were the youngest team there this year by far, competing against mainly Year 12 and 13 Engineering students from across wider Canterbury.

Corey Griffiths Yr 10, Owais Khan Yr 9, Johnny Creighton Yr 10, Basel Abdulaal Yr 10, Riley McMoran Yr 10, Isaac Latimer Yr 10, and Violet Creighton (Heaton Intermediate Yr 8) were there in race gear.

We had some beautiful victories and some catastrophic failures.
We broke a wheel axel in the final race, and our Year 8 (future 2024 student) crashed in the drag race nearly losing her entire wheel! We broke a chain, lost a chain, bent some cogs, and had a series of electrical failures. We replaced controllers and wiring on the day. Some teams, teachers and parents were up past 1 am the night before battling machines…

Resilience … Yes

Perseverance … Yes

Patience … Yes

Team spirit … Yes

Despite these setbacks we once again came out as one of the most successful schools in Canterbury. We placed:

1st and 3rd in Standard karts

1st in Standard bikes out of all entries!

1st in all categories in the engineering design and 3rd overall in the electronics and innovation categories.

We also won the drag race, the endurance, and the gymkhana across different categories.
