BHS PE students raise $6,000 for mental health.

Mr S Ryburn —

Raising funds for a charity of our choice.

Burnside High Schools Level 3 Sports Leadership class were given the unit standard "To contribute to a team or group that has an objective". This had two parts: to raise funds for a charity and to do something physical. We decided to do a 10 hour Jump Jam to raise money for Mental Health New Zealand. We chose this charity because we think it's highly underfunded in New Zealand.

We involved our wider community by inviting our cluster schools to join our event. Over 1,400 students joined in from Cobham Intermediate, Merrin School, Isleworth School, Breens Intermediate as well as students from Burnside High School. During the process of organising our event, we spent weeks calling schools, sending emails and asking people to help sponsor us. We managed to have The Warehouse supply decorations and the Leopard bus company helped transport the students to and from their schools. The day was a major success, the crowd was full of energy and smiling faces. We raised close to $6,000 for Mental Health New Zealand.
