Boys 1st XI Football

D Boon & C Johnson —

Throughout the season the team has had many highs and lows ranging from big wins to tight losses.

But, no matter what the situation, the boys all stuck together and had a great response. A definite stand out of this year was our national tournament. This is not only because of the football we played, but also because of the good times we had off the pitch, especially after not having one for the last two years. We couldn’t be prouder of the boys, many of which we’ve played multiple years with and also it being their last year as well.

One of the most memorable moments from the season came in the form of our semi-final win over Western Springs College at the tournament. Being an extremely hard game against a good opponent, the team managed to come together and put out arguably our best performance of the season. The boys' ability to fight until the very end crucially enabled us to progress to the final with a 2-1 win. Unfortunately we couldn’t come away as champions, losing 1-0 in the final, however it was certain that everyone put their best foot forward on and off the pitch to ensure that the tournament was successful.

We would also like to thank head coach Bully (Mr Andrew Bull) and managers Mr Williams, and Mr Hall who ensured that we were competitive and also allowed the team to enjoy our high school football. Behind the scenes they worked hard throughout the season from organising games, driving the vans at tournament and also providing training on Sundays. This was also the last year that Bully and Mr Williams would be a part of the Boys 1st XI at Burnside, as they have done so for a long period of time, and we think it can be agreed that the following years won’t be the same without them running the show. Just like most BHS students who have been through the 1st XI we would like to wish them well on what they get up to next and hope they enjoy their break away from it all, as they most definitely deserve it.
