Burnside High School —

Korfball at Burnside High has yet again continued to grow and expand to over 30 students throughout the year.

With these numbers we were fortunate enough to be able to enter both a
Senior and Junior team into their respective competitions in both Term 1 and Term 4.

It was very unfortunate this year that, due to the uncertainty surrounding COVID-19, the decision was made not to host the SISS Senior and Junior tournaments. This is the highlight of High Schools' Korfball calendar as it lets players compete against schools which we only see at this tournament and get to experience their own unique styles which we are not used to seeing.

The highlight of the Korfball year for Burnside was most definitely the Term 4 competition. The Burnside A team won the Term 4 B grade competition beating Christchurch Boys/Girls High in the final. This is the first time that Burnside have walked away with a competition win, with previous finishes in 2nd and 3rd place. Everyone in the team is incredibly excited and proud that their hard work finally turned into some much deserved success.

In previous years, Burnside has produced international level talent and yet again the continued growth has led to more players being selected into Korfball New Zealand Development squads. The purpose of these development squads is to prepare players for the upcoming U19 and U21 tournaments when the International Korfball Federation programme resumes. The following students have been selected into their respective development squads:

• U19 New Zealand Development Squad - Joshua Ting

• U21 New Zealand Development Squad - Helina Ta

These selections are a huge honour, congratulations to these students!

Thank you to all those who have participated in this year’s season. It has been a fantastic experience to have interacted with so many students who are truly passionate about the sport and are determined to improve their abilities. Past and present players can agree that Korfball is a great new sport to get involved in - we hope to see many new faces (boys and girls) sign up next year and continue the already amazing growth of Korfball at Burnside.
