Treasury Challenge

Robert Hughes —

Burnside has been a regular participant in this national competition, which requires teams to carefully analyse all aspects of the New Zealand economy, as well as the economic outlook for our trading partners.

From this, the difference between what the New Zealand economy is doing and what it can potentially do is determined, and a decision on the Official Cash Rate [interest rates] is made. This year’s team took a novel and clever approach, using a weather forecast as an analogy. The presentation was done by video conference, and the Wellington judges then asked a series of questions which the team handled very well.

The team, competently lead by Mirei Yahagi, worked evenings and weekends and were well prepared for any question. This hopefully will be useful for Economics Scholarship.
