Senior Athletics Championship 2022

Sports Office —

This event was modified from our normal school wide event to a Senior only event held on Friday 25 February.

Despite the limitations placed on the event because of the nation being at the Covid Traffic Light Red setting, it was wonderful to see so many of our senior students competing in their chosen athletics disciplines. We felt that it very important that we held an athletic event, in particular for the Seniors whose sporting lives have been heavily impacted by Covid over the past 2 and a bit years. Once things have settled down again, we are very hopeful that we will be able to hold a Junior Athletics later in the year.

To ensure the event could take place over one day, the students were placed in year group bubbles and the number of events on offer was reduced. The athletes would normally compete in their age groups.  The events on offer were the 100m, 200m, 800m, 3000m (contested at Thursday lunchtime), Long Jump, High Jump and Shot Put.

It was a great day of competition and banter, as our senior athletes enjoyed a day on the bottom field competing with and against their peers.

Special Congratulations to Eliana Collins 11SDAE who broke the U16 Girls High Jump record with a jump of 165cm. Eliana broke the old record set in 1987, yes you worked that out right - a huge 35 years ago, by an impressive 7cm.  The previous record was held by Kirsten Young.

As the this event had to be modified, we are unable to award our normal track and field champions, instead we will be recognising the overall winner across all the disciplines with a special award for 2022.
