Observing Primates the Highlight for 13 Biology Students at Orana Park
Watching the antics of gibbons entertained a group of 13 Biology students during their recent trip to Orana Park.
All 13 Biology students took part in the visit as part of the Human Evolution topic. Orana Park has a number of primates which allows students to make observations about their movements and behaviour. The active and aerobatic gibbons put on a show for one group, while another group got to observe the huge gorillas going about their morning routine. Being so close to the gorillas allowed students to see the sheer size of these magnificent creatures. Students also had the opportunity to handle and observe differences in skull features from our ancient ancestors, going back to over 6 million years ago, to skulls of modern humans. The test came when students were asked to place these skulls in order from oldest to most recent. Putting the 20 plus skulls in order was a challenge, but the Orana Park staff were very impressed that one group did this very accurately. This is always a very engaging experience for our students and we would like to thanks Orana Park staff for their support of our students learning.
