2021 Environment Group

Jon Land —

The Environment Group has had a most successful year and made excellent progress with our plantings along the Hewlings Stream.

With the support of Trees for Canterbury, the City Council and Tree Tech we have planted over 500 native plants this year and provided them with care and support in their crucial first year.

Keeping the weeds down and mulching for moisture are the keys to success and with over two hundred members this year we have a mighty work force. Our original plantings are now nine years old and Te Uru, our very own native forest, has a nice canopy and a developing under-storey. The local native birds seem to be very happy and riroriro, korimako, tauhou and piwaiwaka (Grey Warbler, bellbird, silver eyes and fantail) are now all residents or visitors to the forest.

It is still the long-term goal to bring both tui and kereru back to our school site and we will keep working towards this objective.

We hope the local community is enjoying our work and everyone can certainly help us by keeping litter out of theforest and keeping an eye out for the baby plants alongside the tracks.

A very big thank you to the many staff who help each week and our fabulous students who are a pleasure to work with and an inspiration to us all.

We all hope that our lovely Year 13 students, many of whom have worked with us for five years, come back to visit us in 2022 and continue to enjoy the fruits of their labour in the years to come.
