Aurora Voices

Ruby Churcher —

Aurora Voices is the auditioned junior choir at Burnside High School.

The choir is conducted by Ms Susan Densem. This year Aurora Voices rehearsed and performed songs from many different musical styles included: jazz, classical and songs in other languages. It was a great educational opportunity to not only rehearse, but perform a range of repertoire.

Our first opportunity to perform came at the North West Festival, a series of three concerts held here at burnside to celebrate the choral talent of the surrounding primary schools. Not long after the North West Festival we performed at the Big Sing regional competition, where for our efforts we received the awards for Outstanding performance of a composition with a Maori or Pasifika text, Outstanding performance of an Early Music composition and, Outstanding Recital by a Treble Choir.

One of my personal highlights of the year was Burnside’s Choral Extravaganza. This event was particularly enjoyable because we got to enjoy the voices of the other choirs and our own.

I know that I’m not alone in wanting to thank Ms Densem for the incredible amount of passion and work she puts into Aurora Voices. Her expertise and advice is the reason that we had such a successful and enjoyable year. I would also like to thank our student conductor Yumeka, a past student of Burnside, for her help in both rehearsal and performance. Lastly, I would like to extend my thanks to every member of Aurora Voices for their dedication to this choir
