Burnside High School is Regional Champion at Dance NZ Made 2019

Katerina Papageorgiou —

For the first time this year the Dance department decided to try out a new Inter-school competition. And it was worth it!

Dance NZ Made is an Inter-school competition for solo, duet, trio and team dance acts.  Four students were interested in attending this year, so we entered a Solo number and a team number. Meg Carter from Year 11, Millie Lamond-Aird and Holly Stryder from Year 10, and Molly Brown from Year 9 completed the team.  On Monday 19th August we made our way to Christchurch Town Hall for the day. During the day all dancers were invited to attend workshops. Each Year level got the opportunity to learn dances from top guest choreographers who later became their judges during the competition.

Later on that evening, Molly performed a wonderful solo in the Year 9 category which she choreographed herself , and the girls performed their group number in the Open team category.  Both numbers were inspirational and focused on the importance of self-esteem. The competition was tough, there was a plethora of talent and skill on the stage that evening. Molly Brown came 2nd in her category with her solo performance but her score was so close to 1st place that she was invited to attend Nationals along with the winner! Finally, the team won their category and achieved the highest score of the entire competition, which made them Regional winners. Unfortunately we could not attend Nationals this year due to the clash with the school's exam week. Maybe next year! Congratulations to the students, and a big thank you to the parents for their support and help.
