Ngākau Aroha- Compassion Award
This award is given to one school in the South Island who has shown kindness and compassion through innovation in their community in this year's World Vision 40 Hour Famine.
We were greatly impressed by the way that the Burnside High School student leaders inspired and mobilised their fellow students to take social action, both through dedicated communications and through leading by example. One class walked 1 million steps to fundraise , and collectively as a school you reached more people in your community and raised more money than you have in 10 years.
This is a phenomenal achievement (particularly considering this has all been done during a global pandemic!), but perhaps what Burnside should be most proud of, is the knowledge that it's students have taken an active step towards justice, and are helping to build climate change resilience in vulnerable communities in Malawi.
