Career Development Interviews

All 475 Year 13 students have had an individual interview.

We are nearly at the completion of Year 12 interviews, with only 10% left to be seen. Amongst other things, there is a discussion about possible future pathways and the subject choice for next year.

Next term Jac Doogan will meet all of the Year 11 students in their English Classes, during Weeks 3 and 4. We are grateful to the English department for allowing this to happen through their classes. The Year 11 programme will occur before Course Selection deadline, so that all students will have had some Careers input into their subject choices.

Year 10 and Year 9 Students have been working on their career development with their Deans. During Senior Practice Exams the Year 10s will have a short careers interview with a member of the Careers Team; with Year 9 interviews planned for Term 4.

University Course Planning

Liaison staff and/or academic advisers from our major tertiary partners visit Burnside High School to discuss the first year courses with prospective students. This is a fantastic opportunity for every student to get individualised, accurate, up-to-the-minute advice and guidance.

All of the course planning sessions will be held over two hours, however students only need to attend for one hour. The two hour block gives some flexibility to students with lunchtime or class commitments.

Gateway Update

Racheal Mountstevens has ten students who have completed their Gateway programme for this year, by exploring aviation, building, being an electrician, Māori adventure tourism and sports exercise. Below are some pictures from four students on their work placements.

To ensure that Gateway has a minimal effect on their school work, many students complete their work exploration during the holiday breaks. The following is occurring during the July holiday period:

Nine students are undertaking their week long work exploration at:

Willow Bank - Zoologist

The Willows - Early Childhood Education

Homestead Ilam - Medicine

Avonhead Vets - Vet Nursing

Avonhead Vets - Vet

Harewood Pet Doctors - Vet

Homestead Ilam - Nurse

Eight students are attending week long courses in:

Sports Recreation and Excercise

Radio Broadcasting

Communication

Live Sound.

One of our Gateway students used their first aid training to help save a man's life. Two weeks ago one of our students, who had completed a first aid course via Gateway, made her mother stop the car when she saw a man lying on the footpath. He was unconscious, had a head wound and was choking on blood. Vanessa Brunton got her mother to ring for an ambulance while she put the man into the recovery position. She waited until the ambulance arrived and the St John staff took over. This is an amazing reminder that we are equipping our students with skills that can really make a difference in the world.

STAR Update

Nic Brown has been busy arranging for students to attend a wide range of courses. This term there has been a big focus on students gaining their Learners Driver's Licences. Twenty-one students attended two afternoon sessions at school to gain the theory and understanding needed to sit the test. Over the last two weeks Nic has been taking those students down to the AA to sit their test. There has been a great success rate with 20/21 gaining their Learner's License. The one student who missed is going for a resit next week.

STP Update

Nic Brown has some fantastic new STP posters up around the school. All of the STP students are doing well in their courses, and there are two more due to start on STP at the beginning of next term. STP is a great choice for a Year 12 or 13 student who has a clear career pathway that links directly to training at Ara or the National Trade Academy. Through STP a student can have the best of both worlds - be a BHS student AND start a career. The students also earn credits for their NCEA qualifications.
