The Burnside Environment Group has enjoyed a most successful and busy year.

Mr J Land —

Under the leadership of E Wen Wong and Ruby Glasson a new Sustainability Council has been formed which has developed new initiatives and helped to organise events.

The Bake Sale in Term 3 was a fine example of their work and provided valuable funds for our planting initiatives at school and allowed us to continue our sponsorship off the Hinewai Reserve near Akaroa. The Environment Group has continued to plant native trees around our extensive school grounds. New Kauri trees near the Memorial Avenue entrance, under-storey work in our beautiful little forest on the banks of the Hewlings Stream and significant work around the high ropes course have perhaps been the highlights of the year. We have had nearly 130 students join the group this year and they have provided wonderful service to the school. We also need to acknowledge once more the contribution of Trees for Canterbury who have provided nearly three hundred free plants and to Steve Bush their manager who has visited the school to assist us in our work. We will continue our efforts next year and we welcome members from all year groups to come and join us on a Wednesday afternoon after school.
