Powerlifting - NZ national squat record!
This year the Burnside High School Powerlifting team has grown to include twenty students from Years 9 -13, including many new junior lifters.
The team included Penny Yang (captain) Alex Dubery, Corban Blackwell, Todd Cornford, Sean Ding, Bella Donald, Kevin Ha, Paiterangi Heta - Morris, Dana Kim, Indie Lewis, Joe Lewis, Dj McLeod, Shannon Rochester, Leon Stuart, Matthew Summers, Kade Thomson, Bailey Trafford, Josh Van Amelsfort, George Wilkins and Ethan Knights (AUTD).
Students have had huge success throughout the year and many have competed at local, provincial and national championships across various weight classes in both male and female youth divisions.
Nationals Highlights included
Corban Blackwell: squat 135kg, bench 85kg, deadlift 160kg, 2nd in division and 3rd best male junior lifter overall
Joe Lewis: squat 125kg, bench 75kg, deadlift 140kg and 2nd in division.
Bella Donald: Squat 110kg, bench 70kg, deadlift 150 and 1st in division
Alex Dubery: Squat 110kg, Bench 62kg, Deadlift 173kg, 1st in division and NZ deadlift record (U69kg Youth)
Kevin Ha: Squat 150kg, bench 85kg, deadlift 205kg and 1st in division
Penny Yang: Squat 130kg, bench 62kg, deadlift 120, 1st in division, 3rd best female junior lifter overall and NZ national squat record (U72kg Youth).

Penny Yang also passed her National referees exam this year, and travelled to Italy to compete in the Powerlifting World Championships, where she placed first in her division - an outstanding accomplishment!
All students, even those who have not yet competed, have made excellent progress in their lifting and we now look forward to the 2024 season.
