Kī-o-rahi

Anna James —

Weather puts a dampener on Kī-o-rahi tournament, but not on the commitment of the students.

Kī-o-Rahi is a sport continuing to grow within Burnside High School. Recently the school team went to a Canterbury tournament and placed at the top of their pool. Although the weather was a limitation faced by the team, they were so motivated and dedicated that they soldiered through the tough rain in order to play the sport they loved. Unfortunately due to the very harsh weather the final rounds were unable to be played. The team has since been invited to attend an exclusive Matariki tournament at Ara at the end of the term. Kī -o-Rahi is a great opportunity for everyone to mix and bond over a Māori sport which increases Te Ao Māori within the school.

Also within the school is the inter-division competition held annually between the prefects. This not only promotes the divisional culture but promotes the sport which is getting more and more popular each year in our school. The winners of this year's tournament were North Division, followed by South and then West. In great anticipation, the staff versus students game followed this, which was won by the students. Annually this proves to be a very competitive game with lots at stake!
