Burnside talent!

Richard McBrearty —

A talented group of cyclists at Burnside High School have continued to achieve great success over the summer Track Cycling season, with numerous provincial and national championships.

Josh Scott 13KLE and Matthew Trenchard 12WDNK competed at the Elite and U19 Track Championships in February. Josh was part of the Canterbury Elite/U19 Mens Team Pursuit that placed third. He also finished fourth in the U19 Mens Individual Time Trial. Matthew was part of the Canterbury U19 Mens Sprint Team that finished third, as well as setting a personal best time in the U19 Mens Individual Time Trial. Josh has now been selected to represent New Zealand at the Juniors Track World Championships in Switzerland later this year. We wish Josh all the best for this exciting opportunity.

At the age group Canterbury Track Cycling Championships in February, Sami Donnelly 10WRIS, Erin Downie 10WRIS and Felix Donnelly 12WTNH all achieved tremendous results. Sami won five gold medals in the Under 17 Girls grade, including the Individual Pursuit and the Points Race. Erin gained four golds, including the Individual Pursuit and the Time Trial, and a silver medal in the Under 15 Girls competition. Felix won gold for the Sprint race in the Under 17 Boys, along with three silver medals. As a result, the three riders were selected to represent Canterbury at the Age Group Track Nationals held in Invercargill in early March. Once again, they all competed fiercely and achieved pleasing success. Erin won gold in the U15 Girls 5km Points Race. Sami won silver in both the U17 Girls Team Sprint and U17 Girls Team Pursuit, while Felix won bronze in each of the U17 Boys Team Sprint and U17 Boys Team Pursuit.

The achievements of these five riders are recognition for the dedication, commitment, and drive that they all show to their training and racing. We look forward to further achievements in the future, with many of the riders turning their attention to Road Cycling in the upcoming winter months.
