National Secondary Schools Athletics 2018

Mrs S Pooch —

Four medals were won at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Athletics Championships.

A full - on three days of Athletics in Dunedin from 29th November to 2nd December. Students were motivated and focused. This is the highest level of competition for Secondary School students in New Zealand.

Cameron Hewitt 10NTEM not only won gold in the Junior Boys Pole Vault but smashed the NZ Junior record by half a metre.  Alysia Gilmore 10NMO gained a bronze medal in Junior Girls Pole Vault.  Our other pole vaulters Nic Ryan 11SCSS and Vincent Chen 10NKTA also achieved high placings. All of these vaulters are coached by Mr William Boyd, our own Pole Vault coaching star. Mr Boyd also gained his own medal with an award from NZ Secondary Schools Athletics for over 20 years service to National Secondary Schools Athletics.

Our young star Taylah Holdem 9WRIC  gained two medals in the Under 16 grade in 300m Hurdles and Triple Jump. This is the first time we can remember two athletics medals to one athlete. There were lots of top 8 finishes and personal bests; Daniel Roswell 12NCPR who was 5th in the 1500m, ran an amazing race in an exceptionally talented field. He will be a force to be reckoned with next year.

The school also have some very talented junior students coming through. The future of Athletics at Burnside High School is looking bright.
