Team Defend Title at Canterbury Secondary Schools Championship
The Burnside High School winning team from 2015 have repeated the winning performance again in 2016. The team of Amelia Garvey, Juliana Hung and brothers Hiroki Miya and Hayato Miya dominated the event with a strong performance at the Canterbury Secondary Schools Championship played at the McLeans Island Golf Club.
Hayato Miya was the new comer to the team at just 12 years of age, playing off a six handicap. Amelia Garvey and Juliana Hung both played sound golf shooting 74, along with Hiroki Miya, who had the third counting score of 76 to secure the win where the best three scores counted. The girls also received a stroke allowance for competing against the boys but the team would have still won without it.
Amelia Garvey won the individual trophy for the best gross shooting 74 off the stick (70 with course rating allowance). She won on a countback from team mate Juliana Hung. Fittingly she won the trophy donated by Tom Whitaker who has played a great role in assisting with Amelia's development through the Kaiapoi Golf Club Junior Programme.
Burnside High School will now progress through to the national Secondary Schools Championship being played at the Nelson Golf Club 29 August.
