Ice Hockey - Burnside Club team

Delia van Slooten (Manager of the Burnside Team) —

We have six Burnside High students who play in the Burnside Club Ice Hockey team during the winter months.

Six Burnside High pupils – Jack Swift, Kyle Swift, Nathan van Slooten (Captain), Alyssa Murphy, Ethan du Plooy and goalie, Tim Carey (Assistant Captain) were starters to form a Burnside High Ice Hockey Team. As there were not enough players to form a full team, it was decided to recruit members from other schools.

The “Burnside” Ice Hockey Team entered the Winter Ice Hockey League comprising the six Burnside pupils, with one player each from Marion College, Riccarton High, Avonside Girls, Papanui High and Lincoln High Schools. Taylor Goodall (Burnside High) was enlisted as the Coach, who also helped out the team when short of numbers as a player and a goalie as necessary.

The Burnside team competed against St Andrew’s College, Cashmere High, Shirley Boys High and Christchurch Boys’ High Schools with games most Saturday mornings during Terms 2 and 3. It was unfortunate that a concussion injury suffered by Alyssa meant she was unable to play for most of Term 3.

During the season there were times when those representing Canterbury in the U17 National League Tournament were unable to play due to their commitments and Sam Collins and Emil Collins from Burnside High joined the Team on ice a few times which was very helpful. The Tournament came to a conclusion at the end of September with a finals weekend for playoffs and the Burnside team achieving well-earned Bronze medals.

This year Ethan and Taylor (as goalie) competed in this year’s U18 World Championship Division III – Group A held in Chinese Taipei representing New Zealand. Taylor competed in the 2017 U20 World Championships.

Jack, Nathan and Tim represented Canterbury in the National League U17 squad. Despite winning all their four games in the finals the Team had to settle for Bronze due to the points system which was in place.

Ethan, Nathan, Taylor and Tim are also competing in the National League U20 Tournament between Canterbury, Auckland and Dunedin which runs during the fourth term of this year.

Alyssa Murphy currently plays in the Canterbury Devilettes (Women’s Team) and has been named in the U18 NZ Women’s squad.

Phoebe Thompson chose not play in the High School league this year but plays in the Devilettes and competed in the NZ U18 Women’s Tournament held in Bangkok - a successful tournament achieving Gold! Phoebe has also been named in the Ice Fernz as a reserve.
