Squash, Badminton and Cross Country Success!

Sports Office —

Two South Island Secondary Schools' sports titles for Burnside High in the last two weeks of Term 2!

Congratulations to James O’Keefe 13OYL, Addison Po 13OGK, and Ryan Gillman 13MTR who beat Marlborough Boys in a tense and exciting final game to take out the South Island Secondary Schools (SISS) Squash Boys Team title. This is the first time that Burnside High School has ever won this prestigious Squash event, which this year was held in Christchurch, 23 & 24 June.

We wish these boys and the rest of the team who will represent Burnside High School at the NZ Secondary Schools' Squash Team Championships in Auckland next term all the very best of luck.

Our Badminton Boys Premier 1 team made it a double in Dunedin (24 & 25 June), winning the SISS Boys Badminton Teams Championship for the second year in a row. The Girls Premier 1 team also placed 3rd in the SISS Girls Badminton Teams Championships at the same event.

Congratulations to both teams:

  • Boys Premier 1 - Baxter Lin 12SBUC, Justin Loh 12SKNG, Jason Zhang 9SHTR, Linus Ling 12SCPA, and Alex Huang 12SCTH.
  • Girls Premier 1 - Sarah Chew 12NLNC, Joelle Chiong 12NJVC, Penny Fan 12SBYS, Maggie Lin 13CUC and Keisha Wong 12NLNC.

Burnside High School also had a very strong presence at the NZ Secondary Schools Cross Country Championships in Palmerston North, 17 & 18 June. Congratulations to all our runners who competed strongly, with many of them placing well above their expectations. The team represented Burnside High School individually and the Canterbury region in the relay event over the weekend. Ben Lough 9SOSC competing in the Year 9 Canterbury Relay on Sunday had an excellent run, and was rewarded with his team placing 3rd overall.
