Rowing 2021/22 Season

Sports Office —

It was was another very successful season for the BHS Rowing Squad.

This season the squad grew from 20 to 33 rowers, training with coaches Christina Blackford and Zach Murphy, who were assisted in the second half of the season by Neve Sinclair.

Everyone from the returning rowers to the novices made great gains throughout the season. While the list of medals below is impressive, what was even more impressive were the continually improving times and personal bests that the rowers were able to achieve. At the South Island Secondary Schools Championships, 60% of the crews made it through to A finals. This was a huge achievement for the whole squad and reflected the hard work that they had put in over the entire season.

The busy season kicked off with the R2K Regatta at Lake Ruataniwha, Twizel in October and the Marlborough Champs in Blenheim in November. These two regattas were closely followed by the Otago Club Championships which were held at Lake Ruataniwha, at the start of December.

While the second part of the season was again disrupted by Covid, a lot of hard work by Rowing NZ and South Island Rowing enabled all the regatta's scheduled to take place in the South Island to be rowed with some modifications.

The annual Canterbury Secondary Schools Championships were moved from Lake Hood, Ashburton to Lake Ruataniwha where the Covid regulations could be safely managed. As part of the move the regatta was renamed the South Island Junior Champs and entries were taken from across the South Island.  This was a very successful regatta for the entire squad who all rowed with a great deal of pride and passion, qualifying for a large number of A finals and also achieving some excellent placings in a number of B finals.

The SISS Champs was the last regatta for the entire squad.  As the Covid numbers began to surge, the decision was made to modify Maadi Cup to reduce the numbers to allow it to take place under the red traffic light setting. These modifications meant that our U15 and Novice rowers would be unable to attend.

Maadi Cup (NZ Secondary Schools Championships) was held at Lake Ruataniwha, Monday 28 March - Saturday 03 April 2022. It was a very different regatta for the rowers, with a number of rowers unable to attend to the regatta modifications and illness. This was a very different regatta for most of the squad with the effects of covid necessitating last minute crew and entry changes. Many of the crews ended up rowing together for the first time at Maadi.  Despite this adversity all the crews put in amazing performances, and this was evident in the number of PB's, B Finals and A Finals they qualified for.

Thank you to all the parents and in particular, the BRI (Burnside Rowing Inc) Committee who do a spectacular job of planning and supporting the rowers at the regattas.
