Malestrom

Harry Burt —

Malestrom is an un-auditioned male choir which has members ranging from year 9 to year 13.

They have had national success over the years and this year was no exception. The choir competed in the Young Singers in Harmony national barbershop chorus competition where they took first place for the 4th time in 5 years.

Instead of competing in the Big Sing competition this year, Malestroms' focus was purely on barbershop harmony and learning more about the style. For the first time ever Malestrom competed with a themed set singing two songs from the well-known musical The Music Man. The ballad Till There Was You turned out to be an emotional journey whilst 76 Trombones was a technically and physically demanding piece for the chorus.

In the month of August Malestrom members committed to a longer rehearsal on the weekend to get used to singing on risers and to clean up all aspects of performance. This was key to their success and achievement at the national competition in September.

I have been a member of Malestrom since my junior years at Burnside High School and was one of the student leaders in 2018 and 2019. The group has a passionate, exciting energy and comradery that can not be ignored.

A massive thank you to the director Ravil Atlas for all the work he has done with this group.
