Mrs A Provis (Teacher in Charge) —

This year’s Squash season has been filled with a lot of energy, enthusiasm and a lot of fun!

With the departure of many seniors and experienced players at the end of 2016, it has been fabulous to see lots of new faces eager to take up Squash as part of Wednesday Winter Sport. In total we had five teams: two boys (Boys A and B) and three girls (our White A team, the Green girls, and the Blue girls).

Across Canterbury there were some strong teams this year, particularly in the Boys A category, but all of our teams played exceptionally well and showed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season. It was pleasing to see so many new players getting involved, willing to learn from the experienced seniors, and as a result improve their skills. The element of fun and willingness to try that surrounded Monday practices and Wednesday games was ultimately the highlight of the season.

Aside from the Wednesday games, we also had two significant events take place. First was the Canterbury Secondary Schools' Individual Squash Championships, in which we had four talented players partake, all who played exceptionally well and put up a good fight over a long five hours of games and against some tough competition. Final rankings were:

Gray Ryburn - 4th in Boy's B Grade

Sam Stewart - 7th in Boy's B Grade

Henry Smythe - 3rd in Boy's C Grade

Michelle Tapp - 6th in Girl's A Grade

A combined Burnside High Girls and Boys A team were also fortunate to compete against Ashburton College during the Winter Sports Exchange. Again, the opponents were strong competitors and tough to beat, but it was a game enjoyed by all and it was great to see such collegial sportsmanship.

Thank you again to our wonderful seniors who are always willing to coach and support our players. Gray Ryburn, Michelle Tapp, Samantha Jory-Smart and Henry Smythe were wonderful leaders whose dedication to the sport kept everything running smoothly.

We hope to see you in 2018 for another fun-filled winter season of Squash!
