Kapa Haka

Anna James —

Te Kura o Waimairi-iri kapahaka is tutored by Anton McLean and practiced weekly on a Wednesday morning.

Although there were many girls (and not so many boys) our main goal of the year was to perform at the Waitaha Secondary Schools' Regionals.

Throughout the school holidays we spent many days practicing and building stronger connections within the group.

24 students competed at the regional competition in October under the guidance of Te Puawai Perenara-O’Connell (Year 13 Māori leader) and our tutor Anton McLean.

Our Kaitataki (leaders) were Sofia Tuliau-waker and Ofa Puleiku. Thank you to Te Puawai, who along with her whānau, organised the amazing uniforms. Overall we were placed 8th.

Throughout the year we have many performances, including pōwhiri, festivals, whānau hui, poroporoaki, Manu Kōrero, What Now and Open Night. The group numbers have fluctuated throughout the year, depending on our timetable of events and the interests of students.
