Tēnā koutou katoa. It is my great pleasure to inform you on behalf of the School board that we have appointed Scott Haines as the new Tumuaki/Principal of Waimairi-iri Burnside High School.

Scott's appointment will take effect from the start of term 3 (17 July 2023).

Scott is a highly experienced educator and leader. He has served as Principal in two different New Zealand secondary schools during the last 14 years, including the past 7 years as Principal of Waimea College in Nelson. Waimea College is a co-educational school of approximately 1600 students and 180 staff. It is notable that BHS's vision and values closely align with those of Waimea College and Scott's own personal ethos of school leadership.

Scott is a passionate advocate for teaching and learning and considers that teaching and working with young people to be one of the most important roles in society.

I am looking forward to connecting with students, staff and the community as we continue to build on Burnside High School’s proud tradition of success, supporting personal excellence and care for others.”

Scott's appointment is the culmination of a rigorous appointment process which included consultation with staff, students and the school community to identify the qualities each group sought in our new Principal. That feedback was critically important to defining the person specifications to guide the recruitment process and we were fortunate to have a number of high-quality candidates.

The Board is excited by what lies ahead for Waimairi-iri Burnside High School under Scott's leadership, building on our strong foundations and record of success.

Andrea Griffin will continue as Acting Principal until Scott takes up his role at the start of Term 3. The Board is very thankful to Andrea for her leadership through this transition period.
