Y12 Business Studies students turn ideas into reality.

Entrepreneurial spirit seen as Year 12 students sell products and services for a positive community cause

Thursday 22/6/23 saw the peak of creativity for the Y12 Business Studies students. Over the past term and a half, the students had been ideating, developing and creating a product or service, then wrapping a business plan around the idea to turn it into reality, take to ‘market’, sell to customers, earn revenue and maybe even some profit.

Products and services ranged from T- shirts, hoodies, soap, cushions, tote bags and key rings, among others. As part of the Y12 Business Studies students’ brief they had to show their business has a positive community impact which meant a percentage of their proceeds are donated to worthy causes as diverse as Burnside Counselling Services, Koru Care and the Champion Centre. Each group set themselves a specific target to contribute a donation

The weather was casting some doubt over the event, but eventually the groups persisted through a light drizzle and set up at various locations around the Quad at lunchtime. Each business group provoked a lot of interest and customers were queueing up for the products on offer. Some interesting promotional techniques were being utilised from the simple posters, logos and taglines, suppported by social media interest, to the verbal announcements of the goods on offer, to ‘guerilla marketing’ techniques in using potential customers as active sales people around the school at lunchtime.

The students sold a lot and earned revenue. Some groups earned enough to meet their expenses (to their surprise) and some not earning nearly enough to meet their carefully crafted goals for the day. One group sold out within the first half an hour, whilst others ended up slashing their prices to drum up more custom.

A great display of entrepreneurial talents across Y12 all for a positive impact in our community. There will be another opportunity for the Y12 students to sell their products later on in Term 3.
