PTA contact —

PTA Meetings

A very warm thank you to our guest speakers at our last two meetings, Pat Buckley and Liv Wells.

Health and Sexuality Education at BHS

The BHS Head of Health, Liv Wells made a presentation to the PTA parents and other interested members of the community. It covered the current Health Programme at Burnside High School and, in particular, the Sexuality Education curriculum, as per the Ministry of Education Guidelines. The meeting was well attended by members of the community. There was a lot of useful discussion and questions about the topics covered in the Health curriculum.  Liv shared part of her presentation about the BHS Health Education Programme and what we can do to support the students' learning.

Teenagers and Drugs

Pat Buckley from Amped4Life shared a powerful message about the pernicious hold of addiction that drugs had on his own life and the decisions that nearly ended it in 1995. He emphasised:

  • The dangers of cannabis on the growing mind and body of teenagers

  • Methamphetamine and its increasing hold on NZ society.

He also spoke about his journey of recovery and his mission to impact schools with a positive message of hope.

Studying at Ara: Monday 25th November at 7.30 pm in the staffroom

Two speakers from Ara Institute of Canterbury will present at the next PTA meeting on:

    • Studying at Ara
    • Helping your child with career-making decision

Thank you, to all current volunteers, we really appreciate your help!

Our uniform shop "open days" at the end of the year are fast approaching and to make these successful we require extra helpers for this period. You don’t need to have any particular experience just be able to guide parents and students with purchasing uniform. The shop will be open for
various hours (during the day or early evening) most days between 9th and 18th December and between 16th and 30th January.

We will send out a reminder closer to the time but please feel free to contact:  Carmen Nolan kerryandcarmen@slingshot.co.nz

Student help is also welcomed and we will be contacting the Senior Deans later in the year for helpers.

Uniform to Sell: If you would like to sell your uniform you can take it to the Student Office and fill out a form with your details. Uniform must be current and in good, clean condition. The PTA will take a commission of 20% plus any dry cleaning/repair costs.
