Term 3 in the Library

Sally Stanley-Boden —

A lot has gone on in and around the Library this term.

Wow!  Where did this term go?  I think I say it every term but this one seems the speediest yet!  There has been plenty happening.

A highlight of the term was a visit from Gareth Ward - author of two teen books.  He presented to a group of Year 9 avid readers and aspiring writers.  Having been a magician, marine, policeman and now bookshop owner and dressed in a Steampunk outfit, Gareth was an engaging presenter.  Magic tricks added to the literary fun and demonstrated part of his advice to the students - write about what you know.  Have a look at The traitor and the thief and The clockill and the thief.

Another group of Year 9 and 10 students attended a fantastic morning learning some of the finer points of writing at Fendalton Library.  'Speed Date an Author' is a workshop event run by the Read NZ/NZ Book Council.  Eight students spent sessions with novelists, poets and illustrators from around New Zealand.

In our displays, Mrs Wilson went all-out this term to create a quiet haven of well-being in a corner of the Library.  Students made good use of the space and a teacher brought her class in to look through it and talk about looking after themselves.  Photos from the display have been entered into a Library Display competition - winner not yet decided so fingers crossed.

New bean bags arrived half-way through the term.  They look very bright and fresh and are still a bit high but will soon sink into the comfortable configurations the students like.  Mrs Grinter has been refilling, cleaning and mending the old bags with help from the student librarians.  Hard to believe it's possible but she has pretty much perfected the technique of transferring polystyrene balls from one bag to another with practically no mess!

Summer is on its way.  Term 4 Library opening hours will change back to summer hours - 7.45am to 5pm.

We've had some students this week coming in and taking armloads of books to get them through the holidays.  (Librarians love seeing that happen!)  Remember, you can read a book anytime on your phone or device through our eBook collection.  Find this on the Wheelers' ePlatform via our Library webpage or the Wheelers' app.  Some new titles on this platform are The boy in the black suit by Jason Reynolds and The Fandom rising (sequel to The Fandom) by Anna Day.

We'd love to hear of any good books you've read when you come back for Term 4.  Happy holidays everyone.
