Student Council Newsletter

Sally-Ann Goodman —

Over the past few terms the 2023 Student Council have been working on many different school related matters. The council assembles once a fortnight to collaborate and discuss ideas. This is a brief insight on some of the progress we have made and the plans to come.

Fundraising

So far we have organised several successful fundraising events for a variety of causes.

During February, Cyclone Gabrielle tore across the top of the North Island- leaving plenty of damage in its wake. To aid with recovery after the cyclone, the Student Council decided to raise money by having a non-uniform day in Term One. Over $1900 were raised and this money went towards helping the schools that were affected by the cyclone.

In Term Two we organised another non-uniform day to raise money for the Cholmondeley Memorial Children’s Home. This charity provides children between 3 and 12 years old with short term, planned, and emergency respite care. Cholmondeley Memorial Children’s Home relies mostly on donations and so the $1200 the school raised was greatly appreciated.

We had two fundraising events during Term Three. The first was a non-uniform day for the Christchurch Youth Hub. The Youth Hub is currently under development but once completed, it will provide support for many young people. This support includes health and educational services as well as housing and recreational facilities. The $1800 we raised contributes to the completion of this project.

Over the course of three days, we also fundraised for the Cancer Society by selling daffodils (with the help of Mr Deavoll’s bubble machine) to students and staff.

International Garden

Recently, the Student Council has been developing an exciting new asset to Burnside High School. This is an International School Garden that will be located between the language blocks (K block).

We plan on incorporating a variety of plant species from around the world as a means of representing the many nationalities here at Burnside High School. The aim of the garden is to provide a vibrant and inclusive space that celebrates our cultural diversity whilst promoting environmental awareness amongst students.

Due to the strong support from the Environment Club, the Sustainability Council, and the PTA, we are confident in achieving our vision for this garden.
