Yan Hao was part of a four-person team representing New Zealand at the 14th International Geography Olympiad in Belgrade, Serbia in August 2017.
The Geography Olympiad Competition consisted of a written test, a fieldwork exercise and multimedia test covering a range of topics. I enjoyed meeting many people from around the world who also have similar passions, interests and plans for the future. It was interesting comparing how similar/different our lives are from students of other countries. I have definitely had my eyes opened to the world, am more aware of what certain countries have to offer, and have also picked up skills when it comes to relating to complete strangers. This trip has definitely influenced my idea of the world and I look forward to expanding my knowledge of the world even more so now, and into the future.
It was also extremely interesting visiting Serbia, experiencing a new culture and visiting a different country. Visiting Serbia was an eye-opening trip as I had never travelled to this part of Europe.
