Football Boys 1st XI

Burnside High School —

The Boys 1st XI Football team of 2023 embarked on a new journey, with a roster boasting 11 fresh faces out of the 16 players.

Led by Cody Johnson (13TKB), who steered the team admirably, and ably
supported by the lively vice-captain Winner Seng (13RES), this team set out to leave its mark.

Under the guidance of new youthful coaches Tobi Wilton and ex-student Musse Tegegne, the season began on a promising note. The team showcased its mettle during the grading rounds, securing a coveted spot in the top-tier, the Premier Grade, among the Top 8 teams from the 14 schools in the competition.

However, the path to success wasn't devoid of hurdles. Battling injuries and setbacks, the team narrowly missed out on the playoff for 5th place in the competition, succumbing to Christchurch Boys’ High School 4-3 on penalties, following a gripping 2-2 draw at full time, amidst dreadful conditions.

The boys' resilience shone through during their excursion to the Linwood Football Tournament in Dunedin during Winter Tournament Week. Despite an early (1-0) setback against Roncalli College, eventual winners of the tournament, the team rallied. Their valiant efforts secured a commendable 6th place finish after an intense play-off penalty shootout against Hilmorton High School, concluding with a heart-wrenching 18th penalty.

Amidst victories and challenges, the season proved to be an arena where friendships were forged, and the team emerged stronger, having weathered the storms of adversity. It was a year where the spirit of camaraderie thrived, and the team's unwavering determination illuminated every match.
