Term 3 Sports Update

Sports Office —

Despite Covid 19 once again disrupting the NZ Secondary Schools Winter Tournament Week, our teams still managed to get an almost full season of winter sport played. There was also a number of students representing Burnside High School in Gymnastics, Swimming, and Fencing late in Term 2 and early Term 3.

It was very disappointing to have the NZSS Winter Tournament Week cancelled for the second year in a row, especially so close to the start date.  The alert level change also meant that a lot of Canterbury Secondary Schools' Sport also came to an abrupt end with only some finals being played on our return to school.  But despite the disappointment at the way the season ended for our teams, it was pleasing to have been able to get so many games in before the Covid Alert Levels changed.

Here are some other results from our teams and individual sports from Term 2 and 3:

  • Rhythmic Gymnastics

A number of our Burnside High School Gymnasts competed in the Canterbury squad at the National Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships in Auckland at the end of July.  Some of the notable placings for our students that we have been aware of are Elle Ilkiw 11WMRI who was awarded a Silver in both the Hoop and Ribbon disciplines and she placed 3rd overall in the Level 9 competition; Mikayla Chin 10WLJJ placed 2nd overall in the Junior International competition and Paris Chin 12WWIC placed 2nd overall in the Senior International competition.

Both Mikayla and Paris Chin were selected in the 2021 NZ Rhythmic Gymnastics  Pacific Rim Team but unfortunately due to the Covid situation were unable to compete. Paris has also been named in the 2022 Rhythmic Gymnastics National Squad.

  • NZSS Swimming

Oli Heaton 12SGLA competed at the NZ Secondary Schools Swimming Championships in the July School holidays. Oli swam two finals at this event, placing 7th in the 200m individual Medley and 10th in the 400m Freestyle.

  • Fencing

At the end of Term 2, the Burnside High School Fencing Club competed at the Canterbury Secondary Schools Fencing Championships.  The whole team competed extremely well with a number of top 10 placings, including a 3rd for James English 10NMDA; 5th for Lachlan Row 13SFK; 8th for James Li 11NWLC, 9th for Angus Hay 9WMNS and 10th for Sam Lidstone 10NMDA.

Three of our Boys' Basketball teams made CBA Finals with the U17 Black and U15 White Teams winning their grades.

  • Table Tennis

The Burnside Boys A team won the Division 1 final, narrowly edging out our Girls A team for the title.
