Rugby - 2nd XV

Mark Ealey —

In 2017, the 2nd XV won their section in the U16 grade.

The 2nd XV in 2017 was given several age-dispensations to allow it to play in section 2 of the U16 grade, where it won the final in a closely fought match against St. Thomas’s U16s. The team only lost one match during the season, a grading-game, giving it a record of 16 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss. IRP player and No. 8 Taichi Matsuda was team captain, ably assisted in leadership roles by utility forward Tom Henderson and open-side flanker Minori Arai. The International Rugby Programme contributed about half of the players to the team, which developed a very positive and enjoyable team culture in the lead-up to the final.

Players who deserve special mention include Takaya Saito who amassed about 350 points during the season as a trying scoring first-five eighth and prolific goal-kicker. Tom Henderson was a hard-working utility forward who showed great promise. Dominic Tiatia and Keigo Uehara formed a very effective midfield combination. Prop, and occasionally No. 8, Tadeo Andriani from Argentina was a real handful whenever he carried the ball, as was wing Sven Langer from Chile. Livewire open-side flanker Minori Arai was consistently outstanding as a defender and ball-carrier. Ofa Puleiku and Connor Smith contributed well to the team, as did Richard Nothwang from Germany, who in his first season of rugby developed from an outright novice into a hard-working lock. Wing Finn Russell came on well during the season and is one to watch in 2018.

The team was coached by Mark Ealey, Warwick Taylor, Matt Rowe and Dale Deavoll, with Darryn Findlay kindly assisting with set-pieces. Carrying on from the previous season, Jan Galloway was a very effective team manager.
