Burnside High School competes at the elite level in Athletics.

In December 2016, the Burnside High Athletics team went to the National Secondary Schools' Athletics Championship (NZSSA) in Auckland. This is the premier event for Athletics and the best athletes in the country compete at this event.

We had three athletes come away with medals: Daniel Roswell 11NCHB came third in the Under 16 3000m, Charlotte Blair( leaver in 2016) came second in the Senior Girls 1500m, Ryan Sutherland 11SBGS was second in the Under 16 Boys 400m and Ryan Sutherland also took home a National Title with first place in the Under 16 Boys 800m. Ryan was also subsequently named in the NZSecondary Schools' Athletics Pan Pacific Team. Charlotte has left New Zealand to take up a university scholarship in the United States.

Others to finish in the top ten included Cameron Clark 11SDVD Under 16 Road Race, Daniel Trenberth 12SBDW Senior High Jump, Eliza Meekings 10WSUM Under 16 Pole Vault, Shaun Skilling 13JRD Senior 300m Hurdles and Daniel Roswell 11NCHB Under 16 Road Race.

The whole trip was full of laughter, fun and also determination as all the athletes went to compete to the best of their abilities.

Later on this year, the Burnside Athletics team will be heading to Hastings to see if they can come away with some more amazing results in the NZ Secondary Schools' Athletics Championships. Good luck to all the athletes.
