Christchurch City Council supporting The Burnside Environment Group.

Jon Land —

Sarah Mankelow from the Council recently visited to see our new plantings in Jellie Park.

For the past three years The Burnside Environment Group have been planting along the Hewlings Stream as it heads towards the lake in our neighboring park. This is to extend our native corridor and attract birds, bugs and the local community. Te Uru, our original plantings, now has an established canopy and self-seeded native plants are spreading across the shaded forest floor. We hope that within the next five years we will see the same success in Jellie Park. The first few years are always challenging as the weeds compete with our plantings for water and sun. However, with dedication, and mulch we hope to succeed in establishing the native plants and shading out the invasive grasses that our colonial ancestors established in Canterbury with such great success.

The Environment Group always finishes each term with a 'Monster Litter Sweep' across the school campus. With two hundred members we are able to search out the litter that accumulates in hidden spots and support the work of our hard working Grounds Staff. We would love the  community to reduce the plastic waste they bring to school and would encourage all our students to do the right thing and use the 74 rubbish bins located on the school site.
