Growing a Poet-tree
National Poetry Day fell half-way through this term. We made a Poet-tree which sprouted new spring growth as students sent in their creations.
Who knew how many budding poets were out in our classrooms and corridors. Or, maybe the Division points and Roses chocolates helped lure them in!
Here's a selection of our favourite poems:
Wonder
The face that tells a story
Stares that make you unique.
The widened eyes that follow you like a ghost.
There is pain within this heart.
The screams of children and ‘shshh’ of parents
That prick your heart like a needle.
The friends and family that cover you like so …
and heal your heat,
It’s all like a never-ending dream.
It’s the wonder that surrounds the world …
and will forever.
(inspired by the book)
Snow White
you walk through the room
tendrils of black follow
each footstep crucifying
your horns so big, yet so silent
to the rest of the room
sitting around me, heads down.
my skin’s not fair, my eyes aren’t red
yet you’ve handed me
the apple meant for you
I have to bite in, society says so
but will a love so true
come to my rescue?
no one says a word
my suffering is muffled
my parent
my friends
my classmates,
you,
don’t say a word
and so, the wicked one moves on
onto the next target
that not of the white lights,
but of the dark shadows
the ones like me, the proclaimed wicked
while the true sin, the inflictor,
walks in disguise of fairness and red.

Pages being turned
Soft murmurs surrounding me
In the library

Be unique, stand out
Don’t care, safety’s all around
Relax. I’ll come crowned

The frog slips under
The ripples tell the story
Then the surface calms

Fingers glide across
the sea of octaves and notes
They don’t disappoint
Grey skies laced with limbs
Winter trees gnarled old men
Spring leaps through their nets.
Lying,listening
to small rustles all around
Waiting to be found.
