11 Geography - Port Hills trip

Mr D Duffy & Mr B Gibson —

On the 4th, 5th and 6th of April the three Year 11 Geography classes went on a field trip to the Port Hills.

The purpose of the trip was to give the students an opportunity to apply their newly-acquired Geographic skills within a real world setting, as well as developing their understanding of important Geographic concepts.

We went to Lyttleton, where the students learned about the cultural environment of Lyttleton, and the changes that have occured to this environment over time, particularly since the Christchurch Earthquakes of 2010 and 2011. Following this we went up the Gondola noting the changes to the natural environment that have occurred. Lastly we visited Corsair Bay, and the students had the chance to create their own islands on the beach from a set of guidelines and parameters that they had been given. In doing so, they gained some appreciation of the natural processes that are involved in the creation of an environment.

The weather was fine for all three trips and an enjoyable learning experience was had by all.
