Students win gold in 1500m, Team Triathlon, Girls Beach Volleyball and Girls Volleyball

Four national titles were claimed during term one. Sixteen students competed in four different events winning gold.

Charlotte Blair achieved her first national title, winning the senior girls 1500m race at the National Secondary Schools Athletics Championship, in  a time of 4min 32.69sec. Charlotte also achieved a 2nd in the 3000m at the South Island Secondary School Championships.

The three-man team of Harley Porter, Matt Trenchard and Angus Bailey raced their way to gold in the Under 19 Boys Triathlon team event at the NZ Champs -  held in Queenstown, 6th to  8th of April. Porter who completed the run leg in the team event also competed in the Under 19 boys individual triathlon event and placed 7th in a time of 1:05.23. He finished his individual race only hours before his run for gold in the team event.

Powerhouse Alice Zeimann and her new playing partner schoolmate Chynae Stark won the National Secondary School Beach Volleyball title in Mt Maunganui earlier in term one. It was the third title in a row for Zeimann, who won the previous two with Nicky Pio. Zeimann was elated to claim a third successive beach title in her final year of school.

"We had tough competition, but we played really well and we're friends off the court, so it translated  well."

Zeimann and Stark toppled their Whangarei Girls' High opponents 21-10, 19-21, 15-4 in the final to clinch the silverware.

Zeimann also featured in the Senior Girls Volleyball team who won back-to-back National Girls Volleyball titles at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Championships in Palmerston North. The girls beat Tauranga Girls' College A , making it two titles in a row for Burnside, who won the final last year. Zeimann was named tournament most valuable player and Stark was named in the tournament team.

A thrilling term one to start the 2016 school year.
