Helen Townsend —

Although competing regularly in the Wednesday competition the highlight of the Term was the SISS Tournament.

The Burnside High School Girl’s softball team competed in seven games at this tournament. This required a lot of determination and focus. It was the culmination of the term’s training sessions and games.

The team started well with close results on Monday against Riccarton and Dunston High Schools. The game against Dunstan proved to be very entertaining. The team had only five minutes to get three outs. They achieved this brilliantly in a mere three minutes. The crowd loved the pace of this game. Unfortunately, despite this great effort, the Burnside girls' were two runs short of the win.

The girls’ confidence and skill levels continued to improve throughout the tournament to the point where they held one of the top teams, Avonside Girls High, to a low score.

During the course of the tournament the girls faced Nelson College twice and demonstrated incredible fielding strategies and batting technique on both occasions. Due to this both these games were well-deserved victories.

Throughout the tournament the whole team displayed comradeship, sportsmanship and positivity. There was much cheering, laughter and encouragement. The whole team can be proud of the way they played and conducted themselves.  They ended up finishing 6th overall.

MVP award for the Burnside High School Girl’s team went to Tatiana Gibbs for her outstanding leadership and all round softball ability.

The Boys' Team faced some fierce opposition and placed 8th overall . There was significant improvement from last year in their hitting,  and an amazing 42 team runs.  Team MVP Nathma Koulabvilage Don demonstrated bouts of great pitching and stamina.  We are all looking forward to Term 4.

Thanks to Miss Wetheral, Hana Alan and Miss Townsend for their continued support and coaching.

Special thanks also to the PTA who funded new pants for the Girls' Team.
