Burnside Video Game Design Course Game Jam

Samuel O'Sullivan —

The much-anticipated end-of-course Game Jam for our Game Design Courses has come to an exhilarating close, leaving us all in awe of the incredible talents displayed by our budding game developers.

With 71 enthusiastic groups participating, the event was a true celebration of creativity, collaboration, and innovation.

The Game Jam marked the culmination of weeks of hard work, where students put their game design knowledge into action, combining their imagination with technical prowess to craft remarkable digital experiences.

Topping the leader board and claiming the well-deserved first-place spot were Ethan Davidson and Ashton Brevoort, creators of the mesmerizing game "The Nexus." A procedurally generated roguelike top down shooter with beautiful aesthetics and challenging gameplay.

Securing the second-place position were Max Campbell and Josh Carson, the creatives behind "Labyrinth of the Casino King." The duo's dedication to beautiful level design and their commitment to refining player experiences truly shone through in their creation.

The third-place title was claimed by by Jay Nair a year 13 solo developer of "Neo' Nonsense." Jay used Unity3d to craft a unique shooter experience set inside a computer being attacked by viruses, where the level regenerates around you while you play.

All the incredible games developed during the year are now available to play on itch.io, allowing everyone to experience first-hand the creative designs of our year 11, 12, and 13 students.

We have little doubt that they will be the future of the video gaming industry in Aotearoa.
