This National Competition for talented Mathematics students in years 9 to 11 was initiated in 1985 by Professor Derek Holton of the University of Otago Mathematics and Statistics Department.

Burnside High School had 18 students qualify for the second round of this competition. Four students went on to be placed in the top 30 in New Zealand in their year group:
