Table Tennis

Mrs T Taylor —

Wednesday Canterbury Secondary Schools’ competition: This year we had 6 teams entered into this competition, held at Table Tennis Stadium in Blenheim Rd.

The Boys A1 team beat STAC in the final, to win the A Grade Open grade, with the Girls A team coming 3rd. The other winners in their grade were the Boys C team, who beat Christ’s College C1 in their final.

The Canterbury Secondary Schools’ Championships weren’t played again this year, due to a lack of entries – same as last year, so our Boys A1 team were officially the Canterbury Secondary School Champions again in 2018.

NZ Secondary School Championships

These were held this year in Hamilton during Winter Tournament Week (Mon-Wed) and we sent up the following two teams to compete in this event:

Boys A team – Alexander Zhou, Samuel Li, Sang-Yong Park and Zak McKellar

Girls A team – Avon Liu, Jiayi Zhou and Aarya Advilkar

Final results were:

Boys beat Macleans College B in the final, 4-1 – to become back-to-back champions for 2018 (Open Teams Grade)

Girls beat Westlake Boys High B in the play-off for 3rd/4th place – to finish 3rd (Open Teams Grade)

Our Girls’ team were the only full girls’ team in the teams competition, and lost only to our Boys A team, so this was an amazing result for them.

At the Individual Championships, on the Wednesday, the following top placing results were achieved:

Alexander Zhou – 2nd U19 Boys

Sang-Yong Park – 2nd U15 Boys

Avon Liu – 1st U19 Girls

Jiayi Zhou – 1st U15 Girls

Aarya Advilkar – 3rd U15 Girls

Congratulations to the Boys A Table Tennis Team for taking out the “Team of the Year” at the Burnside High School Sports Awards in the first week of Term 4!

We farewell Alexander and Samuel from the Boys team, but we will still have a strong team in both Boys and Girls next year! I enjoyed taking the students to Hamilton for Nationals and again being in charge of the Table Tennis programme at Burnside High this year.
