Students learn about the latest technology being used to find pest predators

Matthew Easterbrook —

Year 12 Biology students had the opportunity to learn from experts at Zero Invasive Predators (ZIP) and Lincoln University at the end of Term 1. Students were learning about the Predator Free Aotearoa 2050 goal and what various groups were doing to achieve this. The visit to ZIP and Lincoln University allowed students to see first-hand advances in trap technology being deployed in the field. This includes the use of heat cameras and AI to find and identify pest species as part of eradication programs on mainland Aotearoa New Zealand. The students also had the opportunity to experience a university style lecture as Dr James Ross outlined issues and achievements as we work towards making mainland areas of Aotearoa New Zealand predator free.
