Badminton

Murray Paull —

It has been a busy year for Badminton at Burnside High School, with 13 teams playing in the Wednesday after school competition as well as our top teams competing in Canterbury and National Secondary Schools' teams competitions.

In the Wednesday competition, six of the teams made the semi-finals of their grades and four of these teams progressing through to the finals. The Burnside Boys A team won Boys Premier Grade, the Boys C team won Boys A Grade and the Boys D team won Boys B Grade, defeating the Burnside E team in the final.

Canterbury Team Championships: These were held in Term 3 and Burnside High School entered two Girls teams and two Boys teams. Both the Boys A and Girls A teams were undefeated and won the Canterbury Team Championships.

The Boys A team consisted of Lester Bong 12WSDV, William Wu 12NDFS, Yan Hao Tay 13MTD, Dylan Chan and Charles Sham, both 11NPNG.

The Girls A team, which repeated their 2016 title win, comprised Hannah Wu 13DYF, Wendy Jone 12WWIC, Kelly Ting and Lavina Chan, both 10NCGR.

The Girls B team finished runners-up. This team was Naduli Goonatillake 12WWNB, Tammy Nijcharoenrot 12SJJN, Kelly Vong 12NLRS and Cindy Zhang 12SHTR.

National Team Championships: In September the Boys A team, minus Yan Hao who was overseas, travelled to Napier to compete in the NZ Secondary Schools' Teams Championships. There were 32 teams in the Boys team competition and the Burnside team acquitted themselves well to finish in 10th place, runners up in Division 2. This was a very creditable result for a young team and the prospects are good for 2018 with all players returning to Burnside High School.

Finally a big thank you to Mr Risbridger for giving a week of his time to take the team to Napier.
