Burnside High School —

This has been my first year as Teacher in Charge of Tennis and the teams and I have had fantastic support from the Burnside High Sports Coordinators and Mr Andy McIntosh.

During Term 1, we had four teams entered into the Canterbury inter-school competition but unfortunately a lot of our games were cancelled due to weather conditions. We also saw the running of the Canterbury Secondary Schools' Senior Tennis tournament at Wilding Park, where Linh Nguyen and Christian Mannsperger competed for Burnside, but unfortunately neither made it through the early rounds, but they represented Burnside with pride.

During Winter Tournament Week in Term 3, we ran the Burnside High School Tennis Championships and our 2023 school champs are:

Junior Boys Singles - Sakeri Parnell

Junior Girls’ Singles - Samantha Jiang

Senior Boys’ Singles - Christian Mannsperger

Junior Boys’ Doubles - Sakeri Parnell and Samuel Tao

The doubles final was particularly exciting to watch.

Term 4 saw two teams entered into the Junior Boys’ inter-school competition in Division 1. We played weekly against four other schools from around Canterbury and ended up with our teams finishing in first and second place. At the completion of inter-school matches we had eleven entries across Years 9 and 10 in the Canterbury Secondary Schools' Junior Tennis tournament in November. The teams did themselves proud on and off the court and the results were excellent:

Runner-up Year 9 Boys’ Singles - Sakeri Parnell

Winners Year 9 Girls’ Doubles - Sue Le and Lara Streletsky

Third place Year 9 Girls’ Singles - Sue Le.

A budding group of Year 9 and 10 girls’ beginner tennis players have also enjoyed weekly court time during Term 4, honing their skills and building confidence.

The future of tennis at Burnside looks bright.
