Manu Korero

Sally-Ann Goodman —

On the 18th of June, four Burnside High School students spoke at a speech competition called Manu Korero for Maori students.

This year it was held at Hornby High School and we took a group of students to support our speakers.

Malachi Kereama was our junior English speaker and River Poharama was our junior Maori speaker. For the seniors Gabrielle Hampton spoke in Maori and Taylah Peek spoke in English.

Malachi spoke about “Aotearoa’s covid-19 response.”

River and Gabrielle both spoke about “ko te wheako te kaiako matua o taku ao” (experience is the greatest teacher of my world).

Taylah spoke about “Why an investment in knowledge has the highest return.”

We were very proud to have the maximum amount of students speaking this year with one in each category.

All of our speakers did a fantastic job writing and performing their speeches.
