More success for Burnside High School Students in Mathematics

The events of 2021 saw a number of the regular Mathematical competitions and contests cancelled. However Burnside High School students performed with distinction in a number of national and international events:

  • Four students in the top 30 in the New Zealand Junior Mathematics Competition
  •  A prize in the Australian Mathematics Competition
  • 14 High Distinctions in the Australian Mathematics Competition.
  • First place in the CMA Year 11 Calculator Competition


National Junior Mathematics Competition

In 2021 the first round of this competition was sat by more than 9 000 Year 9, 10 and 11 students from more than 100 New Zealand Schools. The top 15% of students were then invited to sit the final round. 18 Burnside High School students sat the final round.  Burnside High School has had a very good record in this competition, and 2021 was no exception.

Year 11 Success

Each year the Canterbury Mathematical Association runs a Year 11 Calculator competition. This is an event for teams of four students who answer four rounds of increasingly difficult questions. This year there were sixteen teams entered with two of those from Burnside High School. One of the Burnside finished in first place and the other in 4th place.

The winning team was Annabelle Brownsword 11WHGM , Johnny Lawrey 11WHGM, Dilkee Nanayakkara 11NMR, and Max Wallace 11NMCA.

The 4th place team was Ella Matthews 11WMRI, Minami Nakamura 11WMRI, Sophia Li 11NMCA  and Devin Lin 11NDLN .

This is the fifth year in a row that Burnside High School has won this competition.


Australian Mathematics Competition: This is one of the world's largest Maths competitions, sat in over twenty countries. In 2021 eighty Burnside High School students entered the competition and some impressive results were gained.

Maths Olympiad: Each year the top Mathematics students in the country go through a selection process to pick New Zealand's team for the International Mathematical Olympiad. This year seven Burnside High School students got through to the second round of the selection process of the 2022 Olympiad. They were Carol Khor 12SWRK, Nick Zheng 12NSYA, Devin Lin 11NDLN, Fiona Li 13SRT, Helaman Hatcher 12NLNC, Shanika Yu 13SRT and Grady Kenix 12SOSS. Grady Kenix gained a gold medal, one of only 5 in the country. Fiona Li and Shnika Yu gained bronze medals and Devin Lin and Helaman Hatcher gained Honourable Mentions.
