Athletics - NZ Secondary Schools' Championships 2017

Sandra Pooch —

Twelve athletes competed at the National Secondary Schools' Athletics Championships in Hastings, from 01-04 December 2017.

It was a very hot but excellent trip to Hastings with Burnside High School receiving one medal.

Cameron Clark 11SDVD won Bronze in the Under 16 Road Race. Cameron is a hard-working athlete and he was absolutely thrilled.

Our very own Pole Vault coach, Mr William Boyd, coached two winners from other schools. His athletes were the Under 16 Boys Gold Medal winner and the Over 16 Boys Gold medal winner. He also coached Eliza Meekings 10WSUM. Eliza pole vaulted 3 metres for the first time and then improved her personal best to 3m 10. This left her in in 4th place - an outstanding effort! The two faces for the future are the younger members of the team. The two Year 9 students competing in an Under 16 grade both made semi-finals in the 100m and 200m. This happens after heats, quarters etc. This puts them among the top junior sprinters in New Zealand. A very well done to Ashley Farrell 9SJCC and Calib Bone 9WHRC.

Ryan Sutherland 11SBGS was 5th in his first year in the Over 16 800m. He was happy with his new personal best time.

All the others achieved well, with almost every performance a personal best for them. They certainly deserved to be there and did the school proud.
