Badminton - Burnside High School smashes South Island Secondary Schools' Badminton Championships

Victor Ji —

Burnside High Badminton teams placed 1st and 3rd in the Boys' Division and 2nd in the Girls' Division at this tournament.

The Burnside High School Badminton teams had a fantastic weekend at the South Island Secondary Schools' Championships, held on the weekend of 22-23 June at Badminton Hall.

Although it was cold outside, the games inside were heated with some long-lasting inter-school rivalries. We had four boys' teams and two girls' teams competing against the best in the region. The games were highly competitive and thrilling, with many matches coming down to the 3rd set.

For our newer players, this event was an invaluable experience, providing them with a chance to play against high level competition and helping them develop their skills. Meanwhile, our top teams faced off against some of the strongest schools, including Christchurch Girls' High School, Otago High School and Papanui High School. These matches were exceptionally close, showcasing the talent and determination of our athletes.

Our Boys' Premier A team smashed the competition and came in first place, consisting of Justin Loh, Baxter Lin, Linus Ling, Jason Zhang, and Jasper Wong.

Our Girls' Premier A team played exceptionally well, honing their individual and team skills for the New Zealand Secondary Schools' tournament later this year. They placed second, consisting of Joelle Chiong, Sarah Chew, Penny Fan, Lisa Ho, and Yoyo Weng.

Finally, our Boys' Premier C team achieved an impressive third place, narrowly missing out placing second by a couple of sets. Congratulations to Adam Talhah, Rohan Gala, Daniel Zhen and Allen Yue for their excellent effort and success.

Overall, the South Island Secondary Schools' competition was a tremendous success for Burnside High School's Badminton teams. The experience gained, along with the impressive results, is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our players. Special thanks to Joelle's dad, CK Chiong, for helping coach the students this weekend! We look forward to more successes at the New Zealand Secondary Schools' Championships in Porirua in September!
