Korfball - Term 1 and 4 Competitions

Burnside High School —

This year was a pivotal year for Burnside Korfball, and it was a great year overall.

This year we had one of our best-ever placings in the Korfball South Island Secondary Schools' tournament, coming 6th place, which was a major improvement from last year where we came 15th.

This year was also a year of growth for Korfball. We had a record number of players in our Term 1 Friday secondary schools' competition, where for the first time we had two teams entered. We also held a free introduction to Korfball as a focus to get juniors to sign up so we could hopefully enter a team into the Junior SISS Championships and we had a great turn-out. It was just unfortunate that not enough of them signed up for the tournament. Next year we will look to have both junior and senior teams at the SISS tournaments.

In Term 4, it was great to finish our season off with a win, even though it was a very close one. In this game we saw some of our juniors hit key shots down the stretch and had the whole team come together to pull off a great win on penalties against Kaiapoi HS.

We would also like to thank our coaches, Michelle Tapp and Helina Ta, who managed to give us a great experience while juggling their own Korfball endeavours. Michelle is a member of the Senior National team who went to Taiwan and placed 16th in the World Korfball Championship, and Helina is a member of the U21 National team who placed 6th in the Asia-Oceania Korfball Championship in Malaysia.
